Introduction

Zoology is the scientific study of all aspects of animal life that include Evolution, Paleontology, Ecology, Developmental Biology, Genetics, Ecology, Physiology, Parasitology, Microbiology, Economic Zoology, Zoogeography, Entomology, Fisheries, Wildlife and Freshwater Biology. The study of Zoology can play a significant role in alleviation of poverty, food security, development of human resources, sustainable development, and conservation of environment. This discipline emphasis on the protection, conservation, and proper management of animal fauna, therefore a career in it makes the graduates eco-friendly. Human society in the 21st century faces some major problems like population growth, increasing resource use, global climate change, premature extinction of plants and animals, pollution, and poverty, to mention just a few. Zoology is an integral part of natural sciences, and is helpful in identifying, understanding, and solving real world problems exemplified above. To face the current challenges, we must prepare our students for understanding sustainability and stewardship as well as precautionary principles.

Objectives

  • To give the students quality education in the specializations of Zoology such as fisheries, wildlife, entomology, parasitology, environmental toxicology, molecular biology, endocrinology, and other related fields.
  • To provide knowledge of Applied Zoology that paves way for self-employment through opportunities in Aquaculture, Apiculture and Sericulture.
  • To inculcate social responsibilities in the students that serve the society by not only becoming Teachers and Scientists, but also responsible citizens who bridge the gap between science and common man.
  • To develop capability of working independently and collaboration with other disciplines of biological sciences.
  • To promote research culture for addressing various problems and issues in the field of biology, especially animal studies by arranging seminars, workshops, and conferences at various levels.

Job Opportunities

Zoology is one of the broadest fields of science. Zoologists often study animals and their interaction with the ecosystem. They learn the animal’s physical characteristics, diets, behaviour, and the impact humans have on them. The Zoology Graduates can be employed in various organizations like; Federal & provincial public sector departments e.g., Education, Wildlife, Agriculture, Sericulture, Apiculture and Aquaculture, research institutions and organizations, private sector organizations, NGOs (local, national, and international).

About Degree Programs

The department of Zoology Possess regular faculty members with PhD Qualifications. The department is now a full pledged department and runs several programs i.e., BS Morning, BS Evening, M. Sc, ADS/BS 5th Semester, M. Phil, and PhD Program.

Vision

The vision of the Department of Zoology is to be nationally and internationally recognized as the top ranking academic department for excellence in Zoology teaching and research

Mission

The mission of the Department of Zoology is to produce highly dynamic graduates and postgraduates with a capacity for making a prominent contribution towards sustainable development and to instill into the students of Zoology the scientific education, care for the environment and concern for moral values through theoretical teaching and research activities.
