Department of Bio-Technology

Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary field which refers to the application of various types of “technology” to use, exploit, modify or improve existing biological processes for the benefit of human beings. Biotechnology employs the knowledge of Microbiology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Animal and Plant Sciences, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, and Bioinformatics for production and/or development of effective biologicals (e.g. vaccines, hyper immune sera, diagnostic kits, etc), pharmaceuticals, bioenergy, disease-resistant and high yielding crops as well as animals, and microbes for remediation in an efficient, cost-effective and ethically acceptable manner. The tremendous advances in Biotechnology have a profound impact in the fields of medicine, agriculture and environment. About 20% of all world pharmaceuticals are produced today using biotechnological processes. For example, insulin (used in diabetes) and interferons (for treatment of viral hepatitis) are manufactured using biotechnological processes. Many antibiotics are also produced using genetically modified organisms. Genetically modified crops have been developed that can produce their own ‘pesticides’ internally.

The Department of Biotechnology was established in 2001 as one of the pioneer Departments of the University of Malakand. At that time, the Department started 4-year Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology (BS) program in which 50 students from across the province were enrolled. This is one of the pioneer Departments in the country where 4-year BS program in the subject of Biotechnology was started. The Department started M. Phil program in the year 2008. During 2011, several faculty members with Ph. D from various technologically advanced countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Sweden, etc. joined the Department and thus Ph. D program was started in 2011. The Department has qualified faculty comprising 8 Ph. D and four M. Phil faculty members. The faculty members are actively involved in teaching and research and have received Research Productively Awards from Pakistan Council for Science and Technology as well as research funding from various organizations including Higher Education Commission, Pakistan Science Foundation, Directorate of Science & Technology, etc.

Besides 4-year BS program, the Department currently offers M. Phil and PhD programs with specialization in the areas of Health Biotechnology, Animal Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology and Microbial Biotechnology. Alumni of this Department are currently serving in various national and international organizations. Details of alumni can be found in relevant section.
